Frequently asked questions

Common tax questions in the travel sector

What is the REAV and when does it apply?

It is the special VAT scheme for travel agencies (REAV) that deal with travellers in their own name and use goods and services supplied by other businesses: they are taxed on their gross margin. For certain transactions with business customers, the general scheme may be chosen instead.

Where is VAT on accommodation due?

Accommodation is a service connected with immovable property and, as a general rule, is taxed where the property is located. Intermediary commissions follow their own rules, which are best analysed flow by flow.

What should I do if I receive a request from the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT)?

Check the deadline and scope, gather the documentation and answer only what is asked, with a strategy set from the outset. If it is a tax audit, get advice before the first appearance.
